Al Azhar Road Tunnel

Al Azhar Road Tunnel, connecting Attaba Square to Saleh Salem  street, travels under old Cairo offering traffic another route from down town Cairo to Nasr City and Heliopolis.

The tunnel was driven by a slurry boring machine by the joint venture o f Campenon Bernard SGE and Arab Contractors under this very congested area.

BASF were contracted by the joint venture to provide a special protective coating system to protect and enhance the aesthetics of the internal and external concrete panels.

A special grade of Masterseal 180M was made for this project in a semi gloss to reduce glare from traffic lights.

Concresive 2150 was used as the epoxy putty to smooth out concrete irregularities prior to the application of the top coats.

In exposed areas, the system was further enhanced by an additional protective layer of Conipur 41, polyurethane protective top-coat. This product exhibits excellent ultraviolet resistance and was chosen specially for these qualities.

To cover the more than 40,000 m2 of wall surface area a total of 40 tons of epoxy, sealer, putty and top-coats were utilised.
